Anything about switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) , also called simply switching power supplies.

An SMPS is a power supply that converts energy from input to output using switching techniques.

Typically an electronic switch is operated very quickly to generate AC from DC, which is then converted back to DC. This process can be performed with great efficiency (80%-90% is common, but optimized devices can reach 98% easily).

With this process the characteristics of the input DC (which can be obtained from mains AC or directly from a DC source, like batteries or PV panels) can be varied to match the output requirements.
