Anything about integrated circuits (ICs) design, fabrication and testing.

An integrated circuit is a circuit made of miniaturized components enclosed in a package that is connected to the external world with a set of terminals and can be seen as a "black box" performing a specific function.

Please, use this tag only for general questions about IC design, fabrication or testing, or for questions that cannot be framed under a more specific tag.

The circuit inside the package is built on some kind of substrate that acts as mechanical support and may provide electrical connections.

The whole circuit is then enclosed in its package, which ensures further mechanical support and protection from the environment.

The package also provides the thermal coupling needed to get rid of excess heat generated by the circuit, and for this purpose it may comprise metallic pads or tabs that allows the IC to be thermally coupled with external heat sinking structures, like an heat sink or a copper area on a PCB.

Most ICs nowadays are monolithic ICs, that is the circuit is fabricated on a semiconductor substrate (almost always silicon, except for exotic applications) on which the circuit is "grown" in layers using special techniques.
