Anything about the NE555 timer IC and other equivalent integrated circuits.

The NE555 timer is a very popular IC that allow building many different useful circuits with few external components. The IC is called a "timer" because most of its applications revolve around timing and waveform generation.

The IC is mostly of historical importance nowadays in industrial and commercial applications, since the evolution of integrated electronics has produced a great quantity of specialized ICs that can be used in the most demanding applications where the 555 was used (precision timing, etc.).

Moreover, the availability of cheap microcontrollers has rendered the 555 mostly obsolete, since many of its applications can be realized with a small MCU and basic programming.

The 555 remains largely popular with hobbyists, students and newbies for its ease of use and pedagogic value.
