MOVs are 2-terminal components typically used as protection devices against overvoltage. They have a symmetric characteristic curve similar to that of two back-to-back Zener diodes. Therefore they have a threshold beyond which they clamp the voltage across their terminals.

They have similar applications as TVS diodes.
