Tag Wiki
Tags that are too specific don't help create meaningful structure in the questions organization.
They are useless because they will be used for questions whose topics have just insignificant differences and therefore won't help people searching for questions having similar topics.
As an example, consider a hypothetical tag PNP-transistor
, clearly referring to a PNP bipolar transistor. What would it be used for? Does a question on a PNP BJT contains so many differences to one referring to, say, an NPN one? Most probably both questions will be just fine if tagged simply by the tag BJT
.
Any differences related to the specific BJT polarity (PNP vs. NPN) will unlikely help people organize the questions in a meaningful way. Yes, there could be questions about specific issues with PNP BJTs, but they are very unlikely to constitute a set of questions that would be useful to tell apart from all the questions about BJTs.
So, please, avoid creating tags that can have such issues.
When you create a tag you should ask yourself: Will the questions tagged with it have something substantially different from another, more general tag?
NOTE: At the moment the tag structure on this site is undergoing some heavy refactoring, so there are still tags that are too specific and that shouldn't be used on new questions. If you go to the tags page, many of them have 0 questions or miss a tag usage guidance text, so this is a strong hint that you shouldn't use them (alas this is not a hard rule, since there are some tags that are OK, but still miss a guidance text, so use your best judgement).
