Proposed clean-up of bad tags

+2
−0

I propose that we get rid of a lot of bad tags that should never have been created. I went through them all and this is what I think we should get rid of or rename.

I'll leave this meta post here for a week or so for feedback, before I go ahead and edit out tags that nobody got any objections about removing.

(Or if a moderator can help out with that without "mass bumping" all posts, that would be nice. I don't think I can rename or make tag synonyms either.)

Edit: some things to consider:
Tag naming guidelines.
Tag creation/deletion criteria

Too broad/non-specific/ambiguous:

  • accuracy
  • component-characterization
  • computer
  • computer-arithmetic
  • control
  • count
  • equipment
  • errors
  • integrator
  • limitation
  • module
  • network
  • noise - Ambiguous since it could mean EMI, or signal processing noise, or audible noise. Should probably be removed and split into the existing tags EMI, signal-processing and audio.
  • ORing - Confusing if this is about the slang "OR:ing" as in Boolean algebra or O-ring as in a type of seal. Neither makes a good tag, use specific tags like "OR-gate" (digital electronics), "logical-or" (programming) or "bitwise-or" (programming).
  • output
  • packaging - Could either refer to component packages (SOT23, TO220 etc) or packing material that components use (tape & reel, tray etc). Could perhaps be renamed package to be less ambiguous.
  • programming - About as meaningful as having an "electronics" tag.
  • protocol
  • quality
  • reliability
  • switching - Could refer to switch regulators, or power switching on/off, or electrical switching (transistors, analog switches, relays, optocouplers etc), or electro-mechanical switches, or switching things in programming/general.

Too specific/limited use:

(Kindly practice DNI TLA - Do Not Invent: Three-letter Abbreviations)

  • 1-wire - Name the programming interface or MCU instead. Different 1-wire interfaces have little in common.
  • AC-circuit - Use alternating-current instead.
  • analog-computer - Limited use, go with something like Analog instead.
  • cd4047 - I don't think we need a tag for every standard IC.
  • DC-generator - Use current-source instead.
  • DMM - Use multimeter instead.
  • ICMR - Use opamp, Analog or similar tag.
  • OCMR - Use opamp, Analog or similar tag.
  • OTA - Use opamp instead.
  • signal-and-systems - Not a common term AFAIK, covered by the more well-known term signal-processing.
  • stray-current-corrosion - The corrosion tag should be enough.
  • UART-USART - Just use UART instead.
  • UVLO - Supposedly means undervoltage lockout. Personally never came across the term (even though I've been involved in battery charger design). More common terms are brown-out protection, low-voltage detection.

Off-topic/application level/use of electronic products:

To be renamed/synonymous:

  • awgn - Shouldn't we rather have a broader category gaussian-noise? Or just use signal-processing.
  • cmc - Should be made synonymous with common-mode-choke.
  • li-ion-cell - Tags per battery chemistry makes perfect sense, so this should just be renamed to li-ion. (And it would be fine IMO to create other similar tags as needed, like lead-acid, NiMH, Li-Po, Li-Fe4, NiCd etc.)
  • Ohm-law - Any reason why this isn't named Ohms-law? I realize that ' might not be supported inside tags. EDIT: yes there is a reason here Tag naming guidelines. though I might not necessarily agree with that part.

I'm happy to have you clean up tags into a consistent and sustainable state. I checked, and you already have the Edit Tag capability. As far as I can see, there is no special moderator mechanism for editing tags. I don't think it's possible to avoid bumping a post if you change which tags the post is tagged with.

Lundin‭ wrote 22 days ago

Olin Lathrop‭ Okay if you say so :) Anyway I'll let this post sit here for a week or two before I do anything, in case someone got feedback.

Monica Cellio‭ wrote 22 days ago

With Edit Tags you can merge or delete tags from the tag page, which won't bump anything. (As opposed to editing the individual posts, which would be tedious and bumpy.) It's good to check that a deletion won't leave any posts untagged.

Monica Cellio‭ I can't find a way to rename or delete tags so I guess "edit tags" isn't a sufficient privilege. I can create synonyms and set parent tags though.

Olin Lathrop‭ wrote 21 days ago

Monica Cellio‭ What privilege does he need to merge or delete tags?

Monica Cellio‭ wrote 21 days ago

I thought Edit Tags did that, but apparently I was mistaken. It ought to; I'll investigate.

Monica Cellio‭ I don't mean to be a pest, but has anyone found how we can give Lundin the permission to fully manage tags, including deleting and renaming? If it takes moderator privilege, I'm OK with making him a moderator.

Lundin‭ wrote 9 days ago

Not that I actually want moderator privileges... But it feels like tag editing should be possibly by trusted users. We had another user here who did a great job cleaning up and renaming tags who should have similarly gotten trusted with tag deletion and synonyms. So I feel that tag clean-up might be (should be) a recurring event and if we can get at least some 2-3 users who can do that, it will go quicker. Plus they can (at least with the current modest site traffic) review all new tags invented with new questions.

Lundin‭ I just checked, and that user did have the Edit Tags privilege. However, he needed a mod to delete tags for him, so this issue has been around for a while. I think we should add those capabilities to Edit Tags. If the Codidact team is not comfortable with that, then there should be a new priviledge called Curate Tags that allows anything that can be done with tags.

Sorry for the delay (was away). It turns out that renaming and merging tags does require moderator privileges currently (my memory was wrong). Merging isn't reversible, which is why this was made more restrictive when it was implemented, but we should consider changing this now, especially with the Edit Tags ability not being earnable and only grantable. I've started a discussion with the devs about what changes we'd need to make. In the short term, making Lundin a mod would solve the problem; in the longer term, I hope we can do better here.

Monica Cellio‭ Thanks for looking into this. I just tried to grant Lundin moderator privileges, but it looks like I can't do that. I can grant all other privileges except Moderator. Please consider this a request to make Lundin a moderator on Electrical Engineering.

Olin Lathrop‭ sounds like a good plan to me, but for the sake of transparency with the EE community, could you make a meta post? Doesn't have to be long and involved, just propose adding Lundin as a mod for this purpose, so that other community members have a chance to weigh in. Thanks!

Olin Lathrop‭ wrote 7 days ago

Monica Cellio‭ OK, did that.
