In both cases, is the "X" point floating when there is no 12V applied ?

3 votes down are quite a few, why that I wonder...

Everyone would have to give their individual reasons, but here are a few that pop out at me:

  1. The lazy screenshot dump. You didn't bother to properly export the schematic to an image, fix up the image, then post that. The multiple colors and background dots are annoying.
  2. Poor description. So 12 V isn't applied, what then what is applied or not. 5 V? Tied to ground? I think you meant left open, but that's not what you said.
  3. You initially wrote "Thank you". I ended up spending my volunteer time cleaning up your mess. You either didn't bother reading the rules, or thought they didn't apply to you.
  4. No component designators.
  5. It's rather a dumb question as posed. How could you not see that X was connected to ground via a diode in case 1? It sounds too much like a dump of a high level problem, with no effort demonstrated in trying to understand.

Got it, thank you!
