What is the role of the differential amplifier in a delta sigma converter?

A differential amplifier amplifies the difference between the two input voltages but suppresses any voltage common to the two inputs. Based on this scheme

the differential amplifier is substracting an input with a delayed input and outputing a tiny difference to the integrator and that is confusing. So as mentioned in the title, how does the differential amplifier behave or whats is its role?

Note: am a beginner fascinated by electronics, bear with me.

Do you know how a successive approximation ADC works?

@andyaka yes it has the same feed back/loop but in place of the diff amp there is a comparator its crazy.

@pacifist - learn flash ADCs then single slope ADCs, then dual slope ADCs, then successive approximation in that order before going anywhere near sigma delta. If you haven't learnt those first it will be like trying to understand calculus without having a decent training in algebra and numbers. Cart before the horse it seems!
