The LEDs operate between 400-700mA, there are 10 LEDs in two parallel branches, and there are current limiting resistors. as the LEDs were never damaged I excluded their details from the question. changing the MOSFET returned the circuit to normal operation

I'm sorry as I meant no disrespect, the two LEDs are just symbolic, I didn't want to clutter the question with a bigger picture, in total there are 10 LEDs split into two parallel branches and 1ohm current limiting resistors. I only took the part of the schematic I thought relevant.
