Comment Post #290774 Sorry @#52935 - as I hinted at, I was conflicted about which was the better place to post this, and since it was more "how does it work?" rather than "what can I do about it?" (for which the answer is pretty clear), I went for the EE. It's answered here and we don't have migrations even if we wanted...

Comment Post #290785 Thanks for this analysis. I bought that UPS in a hurry because its predecessor had died, and I didn't yet know to be more skeptical. It has powered my computer + monitor for 10-15 minutes during actual power outages, so at least it isn't complete fraud, but yeah, I'm going to look for something bet...

Comment Post #290774 We get actual power outages lasting more than a few minutes about 4-5 times per year, and light flickers probably twice that often. The UPS is a generic [Amazon Basics model](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073Q3BSPG/?th=1).

Comment Post #290776 Thanks for this explanation. I think what you're saying happened to me (no light flickers or other visible signs of even a brief outage) is that I got hit with a voltage change that was outside the UPS's narrow band, so it tried to switch to battery, but the battery wasn't up to the task so the compu...

Comment Post #289348 I see the frustration in your comments, and I understand -- we all want things to be better, you're doing a lot of good work, and there was prior discussion. I think we're seeing a little scope drift -- totally natural given the scale of the work! -- and maybe we need to divide and conquer. The ear...

Comment Post #289392 The difference would be outlining, like the proposal tags on Proposals. We already have support for that; we'd just need to add the reviews tag to a list.

Comment Post #289392 The review tag can be given a different visual presentation if that helps, and the text at the top of the Q&A category can be edited to mention/link to reviews. Would either or both of those changes help?

Comment Post #286470 Our aim _is_ to run Codidact for the communities that use them, both regulars and visitors. (Every regular was once a visitor; we need to draw people in.) I'm having trouble understanding how threaded comments make people feel unwelcome. And if people have answers to questions, we want to give the...

Comment Post #285892 New users now do not get Participate Everywhere. That's a good question about seeing who has an ability; we don't have any way in the UI to do that, but we should. Meanwhile, please ask in the private mod chat so someone with the right access can look it up for you. Thanks.

Comment Post #285892 The ability to vote other than on answers to your own questions comes with the Participate Everywhere ability. In order to earn that ability, you have to have several well-received (score > 0.5) posts. (The difficulty is configurable; see below.) We don't use rep for abilities but, rather, your ac...

Comment Post #285889 Just for transparency/visibility, could you put that in a meta post? In particular, I don't want anyone to be surprised by the rep drops. (Heh, mine's about to go to 1, which is correct for my level of EE knowledge.) We'll give people a little time to object before doing it. Thanks @#36396.

Comment Post #285889 Right now meta votes affect rep, but we can change that if the community wants. (We didn't have per-category rep settings when we set up this community; now we do.) Upvote and downvote rep can be set per category per post type; let us know what you want. Rep changes would be retroactive.

Comment Post #285858 Thanks @#53110. I'm not a domain expert, nor even qualified to participate in the main areas of this community; I monitor all the community metas to see if there are places where I can help with information, but I'm not trying to argue for a particular outcome here. Comment Post #285858 Is the distinction between "papers" (implying research, along the lines of what one might submit to a journal or conference) and general-purpose resources/articles/teaching? Comment Post #285170 One of the top searches is "capacitance multiplier". I don't have the details of what searches led to what pages (including what else led to that page), but it's reporting more new hits on that page than new uses of that search, so that's clearly not the only one.

Comment Post #280564 FYI, the Software Development community has a category for [code reviews](https://software.codidact.com/categories/44). Comment Post #280344 @OlinLathrop could you make the specific rep proposals in an answer so the community can more easily weigh in? I'm happy to set them to whatever y'all want, but don't want to assume that people will dig down into this comment thread. Current values are +10 and -2.

Comment Post #280344 @OlinLathrop we can already set rep differently per post type; questions are 5 but answers and articles are 10. Comment Post #279103 We actually have sketched out some workflows for this, though they're preliminary. One main category of reasons is ...

Comment Post #276146 I don't think sites want lots of categories either. Categories aren't tags. In designing them we were envisioning a site having maybe as many as 4 or 5 (Q&A, meta, blog, contests, maybe something else -- not necessarily all of those on any particular site).
